Stories of menstrual waste: management I

Author Museum of European Cultures - National Museums in Berlin

Place Dreieich

Date 2022

What do we actually know about the waste that has emerged with the mass proliferation of disposable menstrual products since the 1950s? In this series, seven interviews provide very different insights around the topic of menstrual waste. This episode is about an often overlooked everyday object: the hygiene wastebin in public toilets. Dr. Maren Otte and Jörg Menkhaus of the German based company in Dreiech, CWS explain the special design and purpose of a model that has been in production since 1995 and is now very common in "ladies' toilets" in public places such as schools, universities or airports in Germany.

  • Interviews with Dr. Maren Otte (Group Director Corporate Communications & CR) & Jörg Menkhaus (Regional Head of Sales), CWS, Dreieich, Germany.
  • Film: Theo Thiesmeier, Berlin.
  • Idea: Franka Schneider & Dr. Jana Wittenzellner, Museum Europäischer Kulturen, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz.
