Author Museum of European Cultures - National Museums in Berlin

Place Pitlessie

Date 2022

Language English - Subtitles (CC) in English, German and French

What do we actually know about the waste that has emerged with the mass proliferation of disposable menstrual products since the 1950s? In this series, seven interviews provide very different insights around the topic of menstrual waste. This episode is about the history of "female waste" and the specially designed bin for it. Historian Camilla Mørk Røstvik explains how ideas about the female body, the fear of toxic blood and menstrual waste are connected, and what "environmenstrualism" means.

  • Interview with Dr. Camilla Mørk Røstvik (Associate Professor of History), University of Agder, Kristiansand, Norway.
  • Film: Theo Thiesmeier, Berlin.
  • Idea: Franka Schneider & Dr. Jana Wittenzellner, Museum Europäischer Kulturen, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz.
