At the Curtea de Argeș furniture plant, the use of surplus material to make small items of furniture such as telephone tables, shoe racks or picture frames was common practice and was done with the agreement or even at the request of the plant managers.
Angela Verdete worked at the plant from 1982 to 1998, starting immediately after leaving school and acquiring her skills on the job. She was assigned to the ‘veneer’ section, where around fifty women worked in two shifts. Of the objects made during that period, she still has two trays and a kitchen shelf.
