In 1974, 16-year-old Petre Dalea, a locksmith, joined the Reșița machine building plant, which then had over 10,000 people on its payroll. Two years later, he was transferred to Reșița engineering company, which officially manufactured engine shock absorbers but actually produced cannons, with approximately 1,500 employees being sworn to secrecy. Up to the 1990s, Petre held various positions, such as locksmith, quality controller and civil/military representative. Throughout this time, regardless of the rules imposed wherever he happened to be working, he fashioned various household items from surplus material, either alone or with colleagues.
