Sweet success. Even the lowliest scraps of pocket detritus can inspire great design.

What is this object about, who are the people behind it?

Cylindrical and flat fascinator hat, completely covered in wrappers for Chokotoff sweets sold under the Belgian Côte d’Or brand.

What places is this object related to, how European/transnational is it?

Chokotoff is part of the Belgian Côte d’Or confectionery brand, whose products are sold worldwide. These wrappers would normally be a source of waste, but have been used here as materials to make this hat. This is part of the upcycling movement that has grown exponentially in Europe in recent years.

Why and how did this object arrive in the museum’s collection?

This hat was made during the "Chapeaux à Croquer" (Hats good enough to eat) competition organised as part of the "Une Vie de chapeaux" (A Hat’s Life) exhibition at the Museum of Walloon Life in 2012.

What is the relation of this object to waste?

The hat was made by re-using Chokotoff sweet wrappers.
